OUR TRAINING
Huru offers sexual and reproductive health education training to girls, boys, parents, educators, and entire communities so that everyone is educated on periods and how to support girls both in and out of the classroom.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Through Huru’s extensive work distributing reusable menstrual pads and sexual and reproductive health education, Huru has had the privilege of meeting adolescent girls and young women from all over East Africa, many of whom had already dropped out of school and were struggling to find work to support themselves and their families. Our Skills Development Program aims to help these women find a means toward economic stability, employment, financial independence, and a better sense of overall well-being and optimism toward their future.
Youth Unemployment
One in five Kenyans are between the ages of 15 and 24, and unemployment for this demographic is the highest of all East African nations. Covid-19 only exacerbated the problem, driving youth unemployment even higher. Women and girls are adversely affected by this: when they reach menarche, girls drop out of school at disproportionately higher rates than boys, limiting their opportunities for employment.
In-demand Job Skills Training
Putting the needs of the women and local industry realities at the center of our program, our Skills Development Program has equipped young women in Nairobi with essential, in-demand job skills and basic business acumen to pursue her most desirable path to employment – be it a higher wage job in the textile sector or starting a local tailoring business.
Comprehensive Approach
The 4-month Skills Development Program builds high in-demand industrial garment production skills for the country’s growing textile industry. The program also provides lessons on business, finance, entrepreneurship, and health education to support well-rounded, educated, and skilled young women ready for employment.
This highly successful program is made possible by the generosity of donors. Classes have been supported by Barbara Albert’s Mending A Life group and Signature Travel Network.
Personal & Economic Independence
Once completed, young women are prepared to take the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) exam, a government-recognized certification, that when passed can be leveraged to find suitable, higher-wage employment with regulated work conditions.
By providing young women with these marketable skills and the tools they need to safeguard their well-being, this training program acts as a gateway toward economic and personal independence.
Meet Our Current Class
This amazing group of young women are just finishing up our 4-month training program and are making final preparations to take the NITA exam in April. From there, this class will be ready to find higher wage jobs or start their own businesses.
Supported by the generosity of Barbara Albert’s Mending A Life effort, Barbara and her “BFFs” have provided the opportunity for this class to step into a brighter future.
We’re excited to see the class chase their dreams!
