The Problem

Girls’ lives are being disrupted by their periods. In Africa, girls can miss between 3-5 days of school each month if they don’t have menstrual pads. This causes them to fall behind academically and socially, sometimes dropping out altogether.

Our Mission

Our mission is to support Africa’s most vulnerable girls and young women by providing them with reusable menstrual pads and sexual and reproductive health education. It’s a sustainable and comprehensive solution we refer to as the Huru System.

The Huru System

The Huru System combines the distribution of our menstrual kits and our sexual and reproductive health education to girls and their peers. Distributions are led by Huru staff and take place at schools and within the community. To ensure sustainability, Huru trains leaders within the community to build supportive and understanding communities. Huru is dedicated to meeting girls where they are, using menstrual health as a point-of-entry into broader topics like HIV/AIDS prevention and gender-based violence.

Huru Pads

Huru pads are designed to be trustworthy. That’s why they’re leak-proof, comfortable, plastic-free, and guaranteed to last at least 24 months, making them a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to disposables.

Huru pads and panties are made in Kenya by local women and men.

Huru Kits

Our reusable menstrual pads are given to girls as a part of a Huru Kit. These menstrual kits contain 6 high-quality pads, 3 pairs of underwear, soap, user instructions, and a sexual and reproductive health booklet.

Basically, everything a girl needs to manage her period confidently.

Boys Will Be… Allies

Educating boys is a crucial step in fostering a gender equitable environment. Huru gives boys and men the knowledge they need to safeguard their health and the skills to challenge gender norms and combat gender-based violence in their communities.
